Shoppers who love this self-emptying robot vacuum say it's powerful enough to take care of pet hair dirt, dust, and more on any floor type. It has a three-stage cleaning system and can be controlled with a smart speaker or a mobile app.

This upgrade to the standard robot vacuum might be worth it for those who are able to afford it. It comes with a huge dust bin that needs to be empty every 30 to 60 days.

1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO

The i3+ EVO features two flexible rubber multi-surface brushrolls and is designed to eliminate all kinds of debris off bare floors. It is effective on hard floors and is good at sweeping up larger particles and dust. However, it is unable to deal with pet hair. It is also able to blow particles like kosher salt and kitty litter, which require an additional run.

It includes a Clean/Power button in the middle, and Home and Spot Clean buttons on either side. The light ring around the Clean/Power button glows solid white when it's charged, blinks red when the battery is low and shines blue when it's searching for its Clean Base in Dirt Detect mode (more on that below).

The robot will empty its bin automatically when it returns to its home base. You can manually empty the bin when it's full, but it takes an extended time and requires you to remove the dustbin from the base and clean the filter.

In our tests, this robot had outstanding suction on both hard floors and carpeting. Its mapping system for smart is superior to other systems, as it can store multiple maps and perform many functions, including an individualized and scheduled cleaning. It doesn't permit you to create Keep-Out Zones or clean specific rooms, which is important if your home has more than one floor. To get that feature, you might prefer the Roborock Q5+ instead, which is a superior smart mapping system and offers a lot more options for customization in its user-friendly app.

2. Shark Matrix

Shark, the robot vacuum division of SharkNinja (a conglomerate of home appliances) is a relative newcomer to this area. The company has risen in popularity quickly due to its large selection of robots at a reasonable price that are constructed to a high standard. The Matrix is their most popular model. It's a powerful, all-home cleaner that has incredible suction and smart features.

The Shark Matrix comes with a self-emptying station that automatically empties the bag after every clean, eliminating the hassle of changing it manually. The Shark Matrix is, like all Shark robots, is able to follow a specific schedule or be activated remotely with voice commands. It also uses sensors on cliffs to prevent falling off the steps and optical encoders to measure how far it has been cleaned.

While it might not have the sophisticated vSLAM mapping of the Roomba S9, the Matrix is still a great option for those looking for a mid-priced robotic vacuum. Its cleaning path is efficient on carpeted surfaces, and it can pick up dirt on all surfaces. It also has a slightly larger cleaning head than the S9 and comes with self-cleaning toothbrush rolls that are ideal for pet hair.

The only issue is that Shark's app can be a bit slow and unreliable especially when it is used in conjunction with a robot. The iRobot HOME application is, on the other hand is definitely more user-friendly and reliable.

3. Roomba from iRobot

The Roomba i3 is our favorite robot vacuum model bagless modern vacuum because of its impressive performance on bare flooring and high-quality construction. It is sturdy and solidly built. maneuvers itself neatly around obstacles, and is able to recharge quickly. It comes with a huge dust bin which can be easily emptied.

This Roomba model doesn't have top-mounted cameras that are able to identify objects or look for unique features to remember as the more expensive siblings do. It uses optical sensors that focus downwards to detect obstacles. It also builds up an outline map of the floor while it cleans, and takes note of internal sensors such as wheel odometers and gyroscopes and gyroscopes. iRobot's Genius update -- which includes smart mapping without increasing the price of the robot - lets you instruct it to clean specific areas with the iRobot Home app or your voice assistant.

When this Roomba is full of dirt--and it can be triggered to do so by the app or its own docking station--it returns to its base and empties its internal dustbin into the larger external one. The docking station communicates with the robot using beacons, ensuring that they are in close proximity before it starts cleaning.

You can also schedule cleanings using the iRobot Home app or use your voice assistant to initiate the cleaning of any space that requires a quick fix. Its dual rubber brushrolls are designed to remove dirt, pet hair and other stubborn debris. Its sensor that is reactive means that you don't need to manually adjust the head's height or suction power. If you prefer an easier-to-manage experience take a look at the Shark iQ Plus or Roborock S6 MaxV.

iRobot i5 Roomba

This robot vacuum is among the best in terms of self-emptying. It comes with a dirt bin that automatically emptys when it is full into the robot's base. It utilizes its own patent-pending Dirt Detect Technology to help it clean up dirtier areas of the room. The edgesweeping brush operates continuously and its two multi-surface rubber brushes flex to conform to your floors, allowing them to loosen and lift stubborn dirt. This is coupled with powerful suction that captures dirt and dust and mopping tank that releases the liquid solution to completely clean your floors.

It's a great option for floors that are unfinished and can be used on a small amount low-pile rug. It isn't able to clean pet hair as effectively as other models, and can struggle to handle bulky items like cereal when the dirt container is filled up. It also has a restricted range of maneuverability and could get caught up in things like rug tassels or electrical cords. Its battery life is good and it charges pretty quickly, however.

The iRobot Combo i5 goes to the next stage by adding mopping capabilities. Simply replace the Roomba Combo cleaning bin and the robot will instantly transform into an all-surface mop/vacuum robot. It can navigate rooms in neat rows and is guided by the iRobot app, or via voice commands when paired with an intelligent assistant device.

It is better at cleaning bare floors and carpets with low pile than iRobot Roomba E5 and has an allergen-trapping HEPA filter. It's not as sophisticated as the Shark AI Robot, and it has more components to clean regularly. It does feel more sturdy and has a longer battery life, however, it costs more to run.

5. iRobot i7 Roomba

The Roomba i7 has one very distinctive feature that we don't see in other robot bagless automated vacuums: an automatic dirt removal system that is built into its base. When it is docked, a pipe on the Clean Base automatically suctions debris from the bin into a bag that is exclusive to Smart Maps by iRobot. It's an easy, clean method of emptying the bin of the robot vacuum. You don't have to lift the old bin out and let everything go around (which can lead to small dust explosions). This top-rated model has a low operating cost. You'll need to replace the bag each time it fills up. They are cheap but you may feel bad throwing them to the trash.

You can begin cleaning your space immediately after you have paired the i7+ with its Clean Base, or you can tell it to do a few exploratory training runs without vacuuming first to make an outline of your floor. Once you have an outline of the space, you can use iRobot's app to label rooms and create virtual barriers. You can also create the time for cleaning specific to certain rooms.

The i7+ is a top-of-the-line robot bagless hands-free vacuum. While it's very capable and offers all the features you'd want in the home automation space, it comes at the price of a product that's difficult to justify for the majority. The Roborock S7 is less expensive than the i7+, and feels more durable, has lower recurring costs, and has a longer running time. It also does a better job on bare flooring. We suggest that you consider a different option unless you are absolutely committed to keeping a map of your home that is always up-to-date.
